Manatee Death Toll Reaches Record High

IMPORTANT NOTE: MORTALITY COUNT ONLY CONCLUDES FOR THE STATE OF FLORIDA.

2009 was the deadliest year in Florida history for manatees.

429 of these intelligent, but slow moving gentle giants were found dead in Florida waterways.

More than a hundred were victims of careless boaters.

Others were crushed in marina gates and canal locks.

Large ships (cruise, cargo etc.) were also at fault for numerous manatee deaths (by beheading or cutting them in half).

The alarming number of infant and 'perinatal' (stillborn) mortality and 'cold stress' related deaths has also risen.

Now with the Southeastern US in a "deep-freeze" (another, record breaker), 2010 is getting off to a shaky start for this much beloved and endangered species.
