Petition · Save Nosey NOW: USDA, NO 2017 AUTOMATIC RENEWAL FOR LIEBEL FAMILY CIRCUS TO EXPLOIT NOSEY THE ELEPHANT · Change.org Nosey, an elephant who is used for rides & forced to perform tricks by notorious animal exhibitor Hugo Liebel, has been hobbling around in pain week after week, year after year for decades. This must stop! It is the duty of the USDA to protect animals, & the Animal Welfare Act allows for that protection - time for the USDA to enforce the AWA & not grant a license to AWA violators Liebel Family Circus 'Great American Family Circus' for 2017.

ElephantZimbabwe Sends Elephants, Lions, Hyenas, And Giraffe To Pay China's Military Debt! - Indiatimes.com A local wildlife expert said that forcing young elephants to separate from their herds was "a mad act of cruelty" yet Grace Mugabe, the First Lady Of Zimbabwe has sent safari animals to a Chinese wildlife park to pay for military uniforms. The 51-year-old wife of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe (yes, the same leader who decided he & his guests would EAT A YOUNG ELEPHANT during his 91st birthday party), reportedly sent 35 elephant calves, 8 lions, 12 hyenas & a giraffe to settle a debt for boots and uniforms bought for the Congolese military, The Times reported.

petition: Stop the Faroe Island Whale Slaughter

petition: Stop the Faroe Island Whale Slaughter  Dolphins & whales are incredibly intelligent, playful creatures. When the hunters surround them to drive them to the shore, the animals don't know that they're about to die, they think they're just playing with humans. The Faroese Coast Guard are used to help find the pods of whales for slaughter & to stop animal protecting activists - It's horrifying the military's facilitating such thrill killing slaughtering festivals (meat is inedible due to its toxic levels of mercury). TRADITION, HERITAGE, CULTURE ETC UNACEPTABLE EXCUSE, ANIMAL CRUELTY IS UNJUSTIFIABLE, EVOLVE!

The Art Of Beeing | Louis Masai

The Art of Beeing is a mural painting tour of the USA

I will paint over 20 murals of species under threat in 12 cities across nine states in just two months

The murals

I’m painting toys because if we don’t act now to stop extinction, only toys will remain in place of animals. Patchworks are of particular relevance because they were traditionally passed down families by women. I am leaving my patchwork paintings on walls as memories for the children of tomorrow. The bees in this series can be found stitching up the toys because they are the planets’ warriors, they are keeping the planet stitched together. Sadly, bees are under immense threat in the United States. Permission for painting will be obtained at all times with the upmost respect for sponsors and the communities in which we paint.

Buffalo Field Campaign December 15, 2016

Montana Can Protect Wild Bison
Each year, Yellowstone National Park announces that they “need” to kill hundreds of buffalo to placate rancher’s unfounded fears and prejudices. With the assistance of the media, they manipulate facts and language in an attempt to persuade the public to believe their lies. For example, see the recent AP article, “Yellowstone Park Looks at Large Bison Cull to Trim Herds.” This brief but damaging propaganda is loaded with false premises supporting their buffalo-killing agenda.

TAKE ACTION! How You Can Help:

Montanans and citizens throughout the country and around the world are tired of the political games being played with the country’s treasured buffalo.  We are through being bullied by cattle ranchers and lied to by the governments who serve them. Current management schemes threaten the evolutionary potential of wild bison, violate treaties with and autonomy of Indigenous sovereign nations, and undermine the will of Montana’s citizen majority.

ATTN: Montanans, contact your state legislators and Montana Governor Steve Bullock and urge them to defend America’s national mammal. Urge them to repeal or amend MCA 81-2-120 to remove Department of Livestock authority over wild bison, and to support a new plan that respects wild buffalo like wild elk in Montana.

Stop the killing: save the Mauritius flying fox! - Rainforest Rescue

URGENT PETITION PLEASE S/S FAR + WIDE
A massacre is looming on the island of Mauritius. The government wants to kill 10,000 Mauritius flying foxesgiant fruit bats found only on the island - 10,000 to be killed by Christmas in response to complaints by orchard operators. who view them as PESTS. The negative ecological impacts and sheer cruelty of the plan looms large: The impact of flying foxes on the island’s fruit crops has been debunked as a wild exaggeration. Furthermore, they play a vital role as pollinators and seed dispersers in the ecosystem as a whole. The cull could lead to the extinction of the species. Please tell the Mauritian government to stop the killing NOW.

Wildlife for sale: An illegal activity out of control in Peru?

Wildlife for sale: An illegal activity out of control in Peru?
Peru has around 64 endangered animal species – some of them you can find smoked, barbecued or being butchered at Belen market, the riverine port of Iquitos, the largest city in the world which cannot be reached by road. Indigenous communities are allowed to hunt and eat wild game but selling the meat is prohibited. Yet old habits die hard in the labyrinthine streets of Belen market, where produce from the rainforest is docked via a network of Amazon tributaries. Slabs of meat from the endangered South American tapir (Tapirus terrestris) are stacked on folding tables while the cloven hooves of peccaries, or sajino (Pecari tajacu), or the paws of the agouti or picuro (Cuniculus paca), a large rodent, give away their origin. The protected motelo or yellow-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis denticulata) is openly butchered for the pot apparently while still alive.
Baby manatees in one of the pools of the Amazon Rescue Center. Photo by Andrés APDarwin Loja cares for the aquatic mammals, mostly Amazon manatees, at the Amazon Rescue Centre, near Iquitos, in Loreto. Most of the animals are orphans which still need to be fed milk to survive. These gentle aquatic herbivores are often used to adorn lagoons in people’s gardens. Again, the mother animals have usually been killed, eaten. Many children support our rescues because they see that their parents have a baby manatee in a pool or pond, says Loja. “The child says; “Dad, why do you have it there when you know that in Iquitos they care for them’. Thanks to the child the father thinks about it, calls us and we organize its rescue because he knows the baby can’t live without its mother.”

Wildlife for sale: affected species and trade routes in Peru

Wildlife for sale: affected species and trade routes in Peru
The Peruvian regions where wildlife is most trafficked are Loreto, Ucayali, Madre de Dios, Puno and Tumbes. There is a shortage of rescue centers for animals recovered from traffickers. Illegal traffickers want animals by any means necessary, even if they are endangered or if they suffer in transit. A considerable percentage of these species are vulnerable to extinction, either due to habitat loss or poaching.

The Tripa peatland, part of the Leuser Ecosystem and home to Sumatran orangutans, holds massive amounts of carbon that, safely stored in the ground, helps to avert catastrophic climate change. Poached elephant in Virunga National ParkWARNING - GRAPHIC heartbreaking, disturbing & the reality for elephants - We must end the killing - The sale, the import and export of existing ivory stock is legal in Europe making it relatively simple for organized criminals to use the trade to launder illegal ivory from poached elephants. Ivory is openly available for sale in the EU at auctions, in antique shops and online. Some EU companies are even specialized in purchasing and exporting ivory to Asia: more than seven tons of ivory and over 12,000 ivory carvings were exported to Hong Kong alone over the last two years.

End the Suffering at Thailand's Surin Elephant Festival! - The Rainforest Site
The illegal elephant trade is surging in Thailand propelled by tourism & entertainment industries. The Annual Surin Elephant Festival is both a venue to sell illegally poached wild elephants & a major tourist attraction. Surin's elephant trafficking hinges upon the illegal capture & sale of babies, infants torn from their mothers in the wild. Once captured animals are confined, beaten, deprived of sleep & food, ultimately "broken" for a lifetime of labor. As many as 300 elephants per year shuffle through the festival grounds. As few as 900 wild elephants are left in Thailand it's time to take action to end this cruelty.

These are the bile farm bears we’re trying to get home

Animals Asia These are the bile farm bears we’re trying to get home These six bears have lived for years on a Vietnamese bile farm – we’re desperate to get them “home for Christmas” and the happiest new year of their lives.

Trapped in medieval-looking cages, six forlorn moon bears – four males and two females – peer out. Through these tiny holes they can see precious little of an outside world they must surely believe has forgotten them.
Each one has routinely suffered the agony of bile extraction.

Their cages are lined up side by side but they’ve never been able to reach out and touch a friend. Surely their memories of sunlight and nature are all but gone. https://www.animalsasia.org/us/donate/

Cobalt mining for lithium ion batteries has a high human cost - Washington Post

Tracing the path from deadly hand-dug mines in Congo to consumers’ phones and laptops.
Cobalt mining for lithium ion batteries has a high human cost - Washington Post The world has grown reliant on lithium-ion batteries that power smartphones, laptops and electric cars. But the desperate search for the ingredients carries a steep cost. This remote landscape in southern Africa lies at the heart of the world’s mad scramble for cheap cobalt, a mineral essential to the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that power smartphones, laptops and electric vehicles made by companies such as Apple, Samsung and major automakers.

The Post traced this cobalt pipeline and, for the first time, showed how cobalt mined in these harsh conditions ends up in popular consumer products. It moves from small-scale Congolese mines to a single Chinese company — Congo DongFang International Mining, part of one of the world’s biggest cobalt producers, Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt — that for years has supplied some of the world’s largest battery makers. They, in turn, have produced the batteries found inside products such as Apple’s iPhones a finding that calls into question corporate assertions that they are capable of monitoring their supply chains for human rights abuses or child labor.

60 percent of the world’s cobalt originates in Congo — a chaotic country rife with corruption and a long history of foreign exploitation of its natural resources. A century ago, companies plundered Congo’s rubber sap and elephant tusks while the country was a Belgian colony. Today, more than five decades after Congo gained its independence, it is minerals that attract foreign companies.

Manatees arrive, facing spike in boat deaths, loss of endangered status - Sun Sentinel

Manatees arrive, facing spike in boat deaths, loss of endangered status - Sun Sentinel As manatees stream into South Florida for the winter, they're entering what could be a momentous season for their species. The number killed by boats is approaching a record, with 95 so far this year, just two short of the record 97 killed in 2009. And possibly more significant, the federal government expects to announce a decision in early 2017 on whether to strip manatees of their endangered status. The government pitches the change as good news, reflecting the manatee's growing numbers and improved prospects. But some scientists say the proposal to change their status ignores likely habitat loss and recent mass die-offs.

The high death count comes as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service works on its assessment of whether the manatee should be reclassified from endangered to threatened. The wildlife service already has announced a preliminary decision in favor of the reclassification, acting in response to a petition from the free-market Pacific Legal Foundation (PLF is a project of the Koch Brothers). It was filed on behalf of landowners on the Gulf coast who oppose further restrictions on boating and waterfront construction.

World’s Vanishing Wild Places are Vital for Saving Species: Virunga, Gorillas, Elephants… – SAVE VIRUNGA

World’s Vanishing Wild Places are Vital for Saving Species: Virunga, Gorillas, Elephants… – SAVE VIRUNGA
In science, it’s rare that a new idea comes along that stops people in their tracks. For ecologists, this has just happened, in a paper that found that species living in wild places have more genetic diversity than the same species living in areas dominated by people. ..wilderness areas have shrunk by a tenth globally in just the past two decades. Large wild areas are now mostly confined to cold, dry or otherwise inhospitable parts of the planet such as the far north and big deserts. Biologically rich rainforests have been destroyed the fastest. But this new finding is a game-changer, because it shows that genetic variation, the raw fuel for evolution, relies on wilderness too.

Help Wild Bison - Repeal MCA 81-2-120

In 2016, the U.S. Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed into law an Act designating the American bison as the National Mammal of the United States. But such recognition did not come with any legal protection. Millions of once wild buffalo roaming free across America’s grasslands are today, mainly private livestock. The few public buffalo remaining as wildlife live in isolation in small herds on fenced ranges with no room to roam. Many carry genes from the cattle they were bred to by ranchers a century ago. In the United States of America only one wild buffalo population still roams the land of their birthright and remains intact: the Yellowstone buffalo. But without legal protection and habitat to roam free, the unique and distinct buffalo of Yellowstone are at risk of extinction.
help wild bisonTAKE ACTION! The state of Montana must do more for America’s National Mammal. Please contact Montana Governor Steve Bullock and urge him to repeal MCA 81-2-120, a law that wrongfully puts the Montana Department of Livestock in charge of wild buffalo. A common sense solution is to manage wild buffalo like wild elk in Montana. The U.S. Congress holds the purse strings and the ink pen. It can enact legal protections for America’s National Mammal, and the habitat the wild species needs to recover. It can also direct Yellowstone National Park to protect, and not destroy wild buffalo as it continues to do within the park using American taxpayer money. Please contact your members of Congress and urge them to act to protect America’s last wild buffalo.
These are America’s last wild buffalo, beloved the world over, and every voice counts!

Yellowstone park looks at large bison cull to trim herds | Exposing the Big Game

Yellowstone National Park biologists say more than 900 wild bison would need to be killed or removed this winter to begin reducing the size of herds that spill into neighboring Montana.

Park officials will meet Thursday with state, tribal and U.S. Agriculture Department representatives to discuss options for managing the animals.
...
WTF? So it appears Montana has a significant 'problem' with our "National Mammal"? As we just continue mindlessly consuming every thing & every being that surrounds us, soon there will be no 'thing' left (living, at least). Nature's balance is (or, was) harmonious minus the disruption & devastation from human related activities. So maybe WE, the human animals, should be the species requiring better... 'management'...

petition: Save Lily: Roadside zoo must surrender its animals to reputable sanctuaries.

Deer Haven Mini Zoo is a roadside zoo in Keymar, Maryland, with deplorable conditions. Deer Haven's featured attraction is a young Asian black bear named Lily who's confined to a tiny, barren cage with nothing to do and no way to escape the heat and humidity. There is also a pig who appears to have an injured hind leg and struggles to walk. PETA has offered to place Lily and the other animals in reputable sanctuaries at no cost to the roadside zoo, but its owners have refused to do what's right. Please urge this horrible facility to surrender the animals and close its doors.

Baird’s ‘koala extermination program’ condemned – Echonetdaily

‘Stand up for koalas or they won’t survive in the wild’ is the warning call from the North East Forest Alliance (NEFA).
Kevina from near Alstonville. NSW koalas both on public and private land are threated with extinction under new legislation NEFA says. (photo by Rob McIntyre) The NSW Government is carrying out a koala extermination program. It really can’t be seen as anything else. It is gutting protections for koalas in all the relevant legislation’ said NEFA spokesperson Dailan Pugh.

Mr Pugh was speaking out after the state government’s contentious Biodiversity Conservation bill passed parliament last week.

‘On Thursday Premier Baird opened up an estimated 2.2 million hectares of identified koala habitat on private land for clearing under his new ‘equity codes’. Although there is clearly no ‘equity’ for koalas.

"There is a choice that must be made: do we want to protect koalas, or do we want to allow logging and land-clearing to drive them to extinction?" -Oisin Sweeney, Ecologist with National Parks Association of New South Wales.

Koala bear habitats are under attack as the government is failing to protect them in New South Wales. According to the Australian Koala Foundation, these beloved animals are in vulnerable status while their population declines... and we need to do everything we can to protect them. With three new policies that provide a threat to koala habitats, the government of New South Wales should be protecting koalas, not placing them in further danger. One of these policies can eliminate 2.2 million hectares of koala habitat. Please sign to tell the New South Wales Government to protect koala habitats!

Ellison's leadership, the DNC will be transformed into a vehicle for winning elections by showing Americans that they have a seat at the table in a new Democratic movement.
