Manatees arrive, facing spike in boat deaths, loss of endangered status - Sun Sentinel

Manatees arrive, facing spike in boat deaths, loss of endangered status - Sun Sentinel As manatees stream into South Florida for the winter, they're entering what could be a momentous season for their species. The number killed by boats is approaching a record, with 95 so far this year, just two short of the record 97 killed in 2009. And possibly more significant, the federal government expects to announce a decision in early 2017 on whether to strip manatees of their endangered status. The government pitches the change as good news, reflecting the manatee's growing numbers and improved prospects. But some scientists say the proposal to change their status ignores likely habitat loss and recent mass die-offs.

The high death count comes as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service works on its assessment of whether the manatee should be reclassified from endangered to threatened. The wildlife service already has announced a preliminary decision in favor of the reclassification, acting in response to a petition from the free-market Pacific Legal Foundation (PLF is a project of the Koch Brothers). It was filed on behalf of landowners on the Gulf coast who oppose further restrictions on boating and waterfront construction.

World’s Vanishing Wild Places are Vital for Saving Species: Virunga, Gorillas, Elephants… – SAVE VIRUNGA

World’s Vanishing Wild Places are Vital for Saving Species: Virunga, Gorillas, Elephants… – SAVE VIRUNGA
In science, it’s rare that a new idea comes along that stops people in their tracks. For ecologists, this has just happened, in a paper that found that species living in wild places have more genetic diversity than the same species living in areas dominated by people. ..wilderness areas have shrunk by a tenth globally in just the past two decades. Large wild areas are now mostly confined to cold, dry or otherwise inhospitable parts of the planet such as the far north and big deserts. Biologically rich rainforests have been destroyed the fastest. But this new finding is a game-changer, because it shows that genetic variation, the raw fuel for evolution, relies on wilderness too.

Palm oil: Global brands profiting from child and forced labour

Unilever, NestlĂ©, Procter & Gamble among nine household names contributing to labour abuse  The world’s most popular food and household companies are selling food, cosmetics and other everyday staples containing palm oil tainted by shocking human rights abuses in Indonesia, with children as young as eight working in hazardous conditions, said Amnesty International in a new report published today. The report, The great palm oil scandal: Labour abuses behind big brand names, investigates palm oil plantations in Indonesia run by the world’s biggest palm oil grower, Singapore-based agri-business Wilmar, tracing palm oil to nine global firms: AFAMSA, ADM, Colgate-Palmolive, Elevance, Kellogg’s, NestlĂ©, Procter & Gamble, Reckitt Benckiser and Unilever.

Help Wild Bison - Repeal MCA 81-2-120

In 2016, the U.S. Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed into law an Act designating the American bison as the National Mammal of the United States. But such recognition did not come with any legal protection. Millions of once wild buffalo roaming free across America’s grasslands are today, mainly private livestock. The few public buffalo remaining as wildlife live in isolation in small herds on fenced ranges with no room to roam. Many carry genes from the cattle they were bred to by ranchers a century ago. In the United States of America only one wild buffalo population still roams the land of their birthright and remains intact: the Yellowstone buffalo. But without legal protection and habitat to roam free, the unique and distinct buffalo of Yellowstone are at risk of extinction.
help wild bisonTAKE ACTION! The state of Montana must do more for America’s National Mammal. Please contact Montana Governor Steve Bullock and urge him to repeal MCA 81-2-120, a law that wrongfully puts the Montana Department of Livestock in charge of wild buffalo. A common sense solution is to manage wild buffalo like wild elk in Montana. The U.S. Congress holds the purse strings and the ink pen. It can enact legal protections for America’s National Mammal, and the habitat the wild species needs to recover. It can also direct Yellowstone National Park to protect, and not destroy wild buffalo as it continues to do within the park using American taxpayer money. Please contact your members of Congress and urge them to act to protect America’s last wild buffalo.
These are America’s last wild buffalo, beloved the world over, and every voice counts!

Yellowstone park looks at large bison cull to trim herds | Exposing the Big Game

Yellowstone National Park biologists say more than 900 wild bison would need to be killed or removed this winter to begin reducing the size of herds that spill into neighboring Montana.

Park officials will meet Thursday with state, tribal and U.S. Agriculture Department representatives to discuss options for managing the animals.
...
WTF? So it appears Montana has a significant 'problem' with our "National Mammal"? As we just continue mindlessly consuming every thing & every being that surrounds us, soon there will be no 'thing' left (living, at least). Nature's balance is (or, was) harmonious minus the disruption & devastation from human related activities. So maybe WE, the human animals, should be the species requiring better... 'management'...

petition: Save Lily: Roadside zoo must surrender its animals to reputable sanctuaries.

Deer Haven Mini Zoo is a roadside zoo in Keymar, Maryland, with deplorable conditions. Deer Haven's featured attraction is a young Asian black bear named Lily who's confined to a tiny, barren cage with nothing to do and no way to escape the heat and humidity. There is also a pig who appears to have an injured hind leg and struggles to walk. PETA has offered to place Lily and the other animals in reputable sanctuaries at no cost to the roadside zoo, but its owners have refused to do what's right. Please urge this horrible facility to surrender the animals and close its doors.

Petition · Amazon.com: Amazon Smile: Stop sponsoring Safari Club International, they are not a Charity · Change.org

Amazon has a program called Amazon Smile, where you can designate a charitable organization, and the world’s biggest retailer will donate a portion of your purchase to it. I was shocked to learn that both the NRA Foundation and Safari Club International are charity choices. Safari Club International as everyone knows is an historical relic that is needing to be put out of business. Close ties to NRA, USFWS, and Canadian Government and responsible for extermination of wildlife globally.

Sled Dogs Film | Exposing the Big Game

sled dogs filmSled Dogs Film | Exposing the Big Game Dogs in many commercial dog sled companies are continually tethered to a chain and euthanized when they’re deemed no longer useful. In 2011, the public finally learned the truth after an incident in Whistler, B.C. made international headlines: One hundred dogs were brutally murdered and thrown into a mass grave by a tourism company after an unprofitable season.
