2.7 Million Animals Killed by Federal Wildlife-destruction Program in 2016

2.7 Million Animals Killed by Federal Wildlife-destruction Program in 2016
WASHINGTON— The highly secretive arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture known as Wildlife Services killed more than 2.7 million animals during 2016, according to new data from the agency.

The multimillion-dollar federal program targets wolves, cougars, birds and other wild animals for destruction — primarily to benefit the agriculture industry.

These figures almost certainly underestimate the actual number of animals killed, as program insiders have revealed that Wildlife Services kills many more animals than it reports. Of the 2.7 million animals killed last year, nearly 1.6 million were native wildlife species.

Despite mounting public outcry to reform these barbaric, outdated tactics, Wildlife Services continues its taxpayer-funded slaughter of America’s wildlife,” said Collette Adkins, a biologist and attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity. “There’s simply no scientific basis for continuing to shoot, poison and strangle millions of animals every year. These cruel practices not only fail to effectively manage targeted wildlife but also pose ongoing threats to other animals, including endangered species and pets.”

Horses Suffer Horrific Highway Crash on Way to Kill Barn

Horses Suffer Horrific Highway Crash on Way to Kill Barn
Horses Suffer Horrific Highway Crash on Way to Kill Barn
On March 1, 2017, a truck packed with 36 horses and a donkey ran off the road on Highway 82, near Greenville, Mississippi. Eleven horses were killed and seven were shot as a result of their horrific injuries. Fourteen horses and the donkey were rounded up and contained and three others who found freedom and were frolicking in a field were later captured to be transported to the Bastrop "kill barn," a term used for sell barns primarily dealing in horses for slaughter. The driver reported he was in route to the Bastrop, Louisiana from Murray, Kentucky. The horses were bound for the Bastrop sell barn. The Bastrop "kill barn" is owned and operated by brothers, Mitch and Greg Stanley. The sell barn became infamous recently when a video thought to be taken by the Stanley's nephew, Boots Stanley, captured Boots encouraging his buddy, Steven Saddler, in playing a kill game with a gentle dog and ultimately slitting the dog's throat. Their court date is set for July 12, 2017.

...In Defense of Animals will have more news of this incident as information becomes public.

The Truth About Aquariums: Don't Lie To Our Children (5-minute version)

Say NO to Jumbo Glacier Resort, YES to Permanent Protection | Wildsight

Say NO to Jumbo Glacier Resort, YES to Permanent Protection | Wildsight

The Jumbo Valley, located deep in the wilds of British Columbia’s Purcell Mountains, has long been revered for its spiritual significance and beauty. To the Ktunaxa Nation, it is known as Qat’muk, home of the grizzly bear spirit. There are few places left like this in the world and it is our duty to make sure the Jumbo Valley one of only 2 crucial international wildlife corridors, remains intact now and long into the future. Koala population crash highlights long list of government failures, report finds - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Government inconsistencies cause habitat loss and population decline. Koala protection efforts are failing in Queensland despite clear evidence of devastating population losses, a new report has found.
Koala population crash highlights long list of government failures, report finds - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
An expert panel, established by the State Government after the ABC revealed a catastrophic population crash delivered an interim report. It outlined a long list of failures in government policy, planning and mapping, which continued to put the vulnerable population at risk.

A koala with her joey on her back in a tree.Laws introduced to protect koalas since 2008 have "had very little impact in slowing the rate of habitat loss". It found existing laws favoured urban development and were "not constructed to halt impacts on koala populations"...

- Queensland Conservation Council coordinator Tim Seelig said the report lacked any push for urgent action and he called for a moratorium on clearing to protect koalas. "We need some radical action to put a stop to this ongoing decline before the koala become extinct in Queensland," he said.
