Zapiekanka
In Poland, zapiekanka is a popular street food that looks like an open-faced sandwich with meat, mushrooms, onions, and cheese on top. Its easy to make, tastes great, and is great for a quick snack or meal.
Ingredients:
- 1 baguette or long bread loaf
- 200g mushrooms, sliced
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 150g grated cheese preferably Edam or Gouda
- 4 tbsp ketchup or tomato sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: ham or cooked sausage slices
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 200C 390F
Cut the baguette or bread loaf in half lengthwise, then cut each half in half again to form four open-faced sandwiches
Spread ketchup or tomato sauce on each piece of bread
Top with sliced mushrooms, onions, and optional ham or cooked sausage slices
Season with salt and pepper to taste
Sprinkle grated cheese generously over the top of each sandwich
Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the bread is toasted
Serve hot and enjoy
